Cambodia's quirky former king dies at 89

He was many things to the Cambodia he helped navigate through half a century of war and genocide ? revered independence hero, ruthless monarch and prime minister, communist collaborator, eccentric playboy, avid filmmaker.

Most of all, perhaps, Cambodia's former King Norodom Sihanouk was a cunning political survivor who reinvented himself repeatedly throughout his often flamboyant life.

On Monday, aged 89, Sihanouk died of a heart attack in Beijing, where he had been receiving medical treatment since January for a variety of ailments.

First crowned king by the French in 1941 at the age of 18, Sihanouk saw his Southeast Asian nation transformed from colony to kingdom, from U.S.-backed regime to U.S. bombing zone, from Khmer Rouge killing field to what it remains today ? a fragile experiment in democracy.

He ruled as a feudal-style absolute monarch, but called himself a democrat. He was a man who sang love songs at elaborate state dinners, brought his French poodle to peace talks, and charmed foreign dignitaries such as Jacqueline Kennedy.

He also painted, fielded a palace soccer team, composed music and led his own jazz band. His appetite extended to fast cars, food and women. He married at least five times ? some say six ? and fathered 14 children.

When the murderous Khmer Rouge seized power in the 1970s, he was reviled as their collaborator. Yet he himself ended up as their prisoner and lost five of his children to the regime. Later, in the 1990s ? after a U.N.-brokered deal to end Cambodia's long civil war ? he recast himself as a peacemaker and constitutional monarch.

In the twilight of his life, Sihanouk suffered colon cancer, diabetes and hypertension. Prince Sisowath Thomico, a royal family member who also was Sihanouk's assistant and nephew, said the former king passed away before dawn Monday.

"His death was a great loss to Cambodia," Thomico said, adding that Sihanouk had dedicated his life "for the sake of his entire nation, country and for the Cambodian people."

In 2004, Sihanouk abdicated the throne, citing his poor health. The move paved the way for his son Norodom Sihamoni to take his place.

Cremation in three months
On Monday, Sihamoni flew to China with Prime Minister Hun Sen to retrieve Sihanouk's body. State flags flew at half-staff, and Cambodian government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said a week of official mourning would be held once the former king's body is repatriated on Wednesday. A cremation ceremony will be held in three months, according to Buddhist tradition.

While officials said they expect as many as 100,000 to line the route from the airport to the Royal Palace for the return of Sihanouk's body, the immediate reaction in the capital seemed muted, partly because it was a holiday, which took many people out of town.

One of those mourning was 67-year-old Yos Sekchantha, who said she offered prayers that his soul would rest in peace.

"I don't know much about politics, but the king father was really a good leader and cared about his county and people," she said as tears welled in her eyes.

Many Cambodians, though, are too young to have emotional bonds to a man who in the past two decades has been overshadowed by Hun Sen, the country's current political strongman.

In January, Sihanouk requested he be cremated in the Cambodian and Buddhist tradition. He asked that his ashes be put in an urn, preferably made of gold, and placed in a stupa at the Royal Palace.

Crafty politician
Born Oct. 31, 1922, Sihanouk enjoyed a pampered childhood in French colonial Indochina. In 1941, the French crowned him king instead of other relatives closer in line to the throne because they thought the pudgy, giggling prince would be easy to control.

They were the first of many to underestimate him, and by 1953 the French were out.

In 1955, Sihanouk stepped down from the throne, organized a mass political party and went on to hold various positions as head of government and state.

Video: Tasty rats flourish in Cambodia after monsoons (on this page)

Through those years, he steered Cambodia toward uneasy neutrality at the height of the Cold War and was a founder of the Non-Aligned Movement.

In 1965, he broke off relations with Washington as U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War shifted into high gear. But by 1969, worried about increasing Vietnamese communist use of Cambodian soil, he made new overtures to America and turned away from China.

Sihanouk's top priority was to keep Cambodia out of the war, but he could not. U.S. aircraft bombed Vietnamese communist sanctuaries in Cambodia with increasing regularity, over his public protests. Privately, U.S. officials believed, he had given tacit permission for the attacks on Vietnamese communist sanctuaries near Cambodia's eastern border.

Internally, Cambodia was a one-man show. Sihanouk's sharpest critics accused him of running a medieval state as an ancient Khmer ruler reincarnated in Western dress.

"I am Sihanouk," he once said, "and all Cambodians are my children."

Indeed, many adored Sihanouk as a near-deity.

In 1970, though, Sihanouk was overthrown in a U.S.-backed coup that came while he was abroad on a trip that included a stay at a French weight-loss clinic. He spent years of lonely, if lavish, exile in Beijing.

Seeking to regain the throne, he joined the communist Khmer Rouge-dominated rebels after his overthrow. Only a few years earlier, his government had been suppressing them in the city and countryside.

They had numbered only a few hundred until the coup, but his presence gave them a legitimacy they had never before enjoyed.

The alliance left Sihanouk open to subsequent criticism that he opened the way for the Khmer Rouge holocaust. But his relations with the communist group were always strained.

"The Khmer Rouge do not like me at all, and I know that. Ooh, la, la ... It is clear to me," he said in a 1973 interview. "When they no longer need me, they will spit me out like a cherry pit."

House arrest
When the Khmer Rouge seized power in 1975, Sihanouk returned home. But he was detained and the former rebels ordered his execution. Only the personal intervention of Chinese leader Zhou Enlai saved him.

With Sihanouk under house arrest in the Royal Palace, the Khmer Rouge ran an ultra-radical Maoist regime from 1975 to 1979, emptying the cities to create a vast network of forced labor camps. An estimated 1.7 million Cambodians were executed or died of disease and hunger under their rule.

Vietnam invaded in 1978 and toppled the Khmer Rouge. Freed as the Vietnamese advanced on Phnom Penh, Sihanouk found exile in Beijing and North Korea.

From there, he nominally headed an unlikely coalition of three guerrilla groups ? including his former Khmer Rouge captors ? fighting the Vietnamese-installed puppet government. The war lasted a decade.

Sihanouk remained a unifying figure, though, going on to lead the U.N.-supported interim structure that ran Cambodia until 1993 elections.

The same year, Sihanouk re-ascended the throne in a traditional Khmer coronation. Restored to his palace and travelling the countryside with personal bodyguards on loan from North Korea, he assumed a new role as beloved father of the country ? even though many adoring, older Cambodians expressed hope for a return of his previous direct rule.

But the bright promise of the elections soon faded.

Four years after the polls, Hun Sen launched a violent coup, and he remains in power to this day.

In the last years of his life, Sihanouk's profile and influence receded. While older people in the countryside still held him in reverence, the young generation regarded him as a figure of the past and one partly responsible for Cambodia's tragedy.

Rarely at a loss for words, he became for a time a prolific blogger, posting his musings on current affairs and past controversies. Most of his writing was literally in his own hand ? his site featured images of letters, usually in French in a cramped cursive script, along with handwritten marginalia to news clippings that caught his interest.

His production tailed off, however, as he retreated further from the public eye, spending more and more time under doctors' care in Beijing.

The hard-living Sihanouk had suffered ill health since the early 1990s. He endured cancer, a brain lesion and arterial, heart, lung, liver and eye ailments.

In late 2011, on his return from another extended stay in China, Sihanouk dramatically declared that he never intended to leave his homeland again. But true to his mercurial reputation, he flew off to Beijing just a few months later for medical care.

How Stroke Care Is Done | My Handy Infos

If anyone needs stroke care Las Vegas has a range of facilities manned by highly capable staff. These work to nurse victims of brain attacks back to health, and enable them to live a normal life once again. Where that is not possible, they offer supportive nursing so that the person can live with as little struggle as possible.

This can happen because a critical circulatory system is clogged. A blood clot is usually to blame. These may form in a very narrow blood vessel, in the brain itself, or in another part of the body. A brain attack can also happen as a result of a blood vessel in the brain hemorrhaging.

If treatment does not begin immediately, brain cells begin dying. As soon as symptoms of an attack are noted, medical attention should be sought quickly. Such signs include dizziness, weakness especially on one side of the body, slurring of speech, inability to communicate, inability to coordinate actions, unconsciousness among others.

More radical treatments involve using a catheter to deliver medicine to the affected vessel. Catheters may be used along with tiny mechanical drills or ultrasonic heads to destroy the clot. An angioplasty can be performed, which again involves using the catheter, only this time with a balloon, which is inflated inside the blood vessel, destroying the clot and at the same time widening it.

If a hemorrhage is the cause, the offending blood vessel is closed. Whichever the cause, steps are taken to prevent another attack happening. The chances of this happening are usually higher after another attack. This however drops after some time. After this starts the recovery period. It is extremely important that a patient takes better care of themselves. This includes exercising regularly, watching their diet, particularly avoiding fats and too much salt.

Recovery can take anywhere from weeks to many years. A person may recover a majority of their functions. Some patients may need some assistance to live normally, and as such, they can move back home. It has been proven that the presence of family greatly accelerates recovery. Others may need more specialized treatment, and end up in nursing homes.

The patient has to stop smoking, watch what they eat and exercise regularly, especially as part of physiotherapy. Some patients can move back home and live normally with some assistance, or they may have to be moved to a more specialized facility. For stroke care Las Vegas has the requisite facilities and personnel.

STRATFOR: Egypt Is Prepared To Bomb All Of ... - Business Insider

In 2010 Egypt discussed taking military action in cooperation with Sudan against Ethiopia to protect their stake in Nile River, according to internal emails from the U.S. private-security firm Stratfor.

Egypt and Sudan get 90 percent of the river?s water under colonial-era accords while upstream countries including Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia have been clamoring for a new deal during more than a decade of talks.

The Nile flows south to north,?making it one of only a handful of rivers in the world to do so and one of only two in Africa.

So, rather than Cairo sitting at the mouth of the massive water supply, it sits dead last?subject to all the whims and fancies of each upstream nation. With several factional governments upstream and the premium on fresh water, diplomacy only goes so far.

A dispatch from May 26, 2010, that cited information from a?Egyptian diplomatic source points to the country's frustration:

Sudanese president Umar al-Bashir has agreed to allow the Egyptians to?build an a small airbase in Kusti to accommodate Egyptian commandos who?might be sent to Ethiopia to destroy water facilities on the Blue Nile...?It?will be their option if everything else fails

The Blue Nile, which begins in Ethiopia,?contributes about 85 percent of the flow that passes through Egypt to the Mediterranean.

Ethiopia became an even bigger threat?a month after the Egyptian Revolution toppled President Hosni Mubarak in February 2011?when they?announced new details about the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

In April of this year?Bradley Hope of the?The National?reported?that construction had begun and that the?massive project?"could destabilize Egypt in a way that would make the last year of political upheaval look minuscule."

"It would lead to political, economic and social instability," ?Mohamed Nasr El Din Allam, Egypt's minister of water and irrigation until early last year, told Hope.?"Millions of people would go hungry. There would be water shortages everywhere. It's huge."

Ethiopia is also currently struggling to fund the dam, which would need foreign aid to be completed.?Egypt and Sudan have lobbied foreign donors to refrain from funding the project while they try to find a diplomatic solution to the increasingly dire water situation.

A dispatch from June 1, 2010, that cited a "high-level Egyptian security/intel source, in regular?direct contact with Mubarak and [then-intelligence head Omar] Suleiman" said:

The only country that is not cooperating is Ethiopia. We are continuing?to talk to them, using the diplomatic approach. Yes, we are discussing?military cooperation with Sudan. ...?If it comes to a crisis, we will send a jet to bomb the dam?and come back in one day, simple as that. Or we can send our special?forces in to block/sabotage the dam...?Look back to an operation?Egypt did in the mid-late 1970s, i think 1976, when Ethiopia was trying to?build a large dam. We blew up the equipment while it was traveling by sea?to Ethiopia.

A dispatch from July 29, 2010, that cited the Egyptian ambassador to Lebanon said that Egypt and leaders of the soon-to-be independent?southern region of Sudan "agreed on developing strategic relations?between their two countries," including Egypt training the South Sudan military, and noted that "the?horizons for Egyptian-southern Sudanese cooperation are limitless since?the south needs everything."

In 1979 Anwar Sadat, Egypt?s second president,?said: ?The only matter that could take Egypt to war again is water."

The government of current Egyptian President?Mohammed Morsi described the Stratfor emails as?hearsay ?designed to disturb Egyptian-Ethiopian relations.?

WikiLeaks?has published 53,860?out of what it says is a cache of 5 million internal Stratfor emails (dated between?July 2004 and December 2011) obtained by the hacker collective?Anonymous?around Christmas. Check out our coverage here.

Using a Circular Saw Like a Pro - Articles :: Networx

undefinedIn terms of versatility, the circular saw is king among power saws, but it's also a classic example of a jack of all trades, master of none. It can make rip cuts, crosscuts, notches, bevels, and miters in almost any size or type of material, but it generally can't promise a high degree of accuracy or repeatability. Pros rely on circular saws for fast framing cuts or to go where other saws can't, like when trimming decking that's already installed or notching out a stair stringer. If your home shop doesn't include a table saw, the circular saw also fills in for all rip cuts and bevels. The following tips cover several of the most common circular saw functions, whether it's the best tool for the job or not (because for some of us it's often the only tool for the job).

Circular Saw Terminology

This is a very straightforward tool, so there isn't much to work out in terms of identifying parts and their functions. We just need to make it clear that here we're calling the big metal plate that rides along the wood the "base." Some people call it foot; to others it's a table or a baseplate. Same thing. It's the part that you move up and down to adjust the cutting depth, or you tilt it side-to-side to adjust the blade angle.

Sighting Along the Blade

Now that we know what the base is, we can talk about the little notch (or notches) at the front edge of the base that's there to help you align the blade with your cutting line as you push the saw through the cut. There are a few problems with this system: 1. The notch often isn't precisely aligned with either side of the blade, so the actual cut isn't right where the notch is; 2. The notch is a couple of inches in front of the blade, so if the saw is turned even the slightest amount, the cut will be offset even further from the notch; and 3. The notch often can't accurately account for the kerf?the amount of material removed by the blade?because every blade has its own kerf width.

You can use the base notch to guide rough cuts, but for much better accuracy watch the blade itself as it travels down the cutting line. If you're right-handed and have a standard sidewinder saw (blade is on the right side of the motor, when viewed from the rear), watching the blade requires leaning over the saw a bit, and sometimes getting dust and chips in the face. That's why you always wear safety glasses. With a worm-drive saw (blade to the left of the motor), the blade is more visible from the left side during a cut, a clear advantage for right-handers. With either type of saw, sometimes you have to watch the less-visible side of the blade, and you do this by looking, more or less, at the front of the blade or through the little space at the front of the motor; don't forget those safety glasses.

Making Long, Straight Cuts

The most reliable way to make long rip cuts (with the wood grain) or crosscuts (across the grain) is by clamping a straightedge to your workpiece and having the saw base ride along the straightedge. You can make a jig for this using a base piece of thin plywood or hardboard and fastening a straight board to the base. Then, you run the saw down the jig with the saw base against the board, cutting off the plywood base a couple of inches from the board (depending on your saw design). To use the jig, you set the plywood edge on your cutting line, and that's where the saw will cut. However, unless the guide board is dead-straight and perfectly smooth, this kind of straightedge can produce imperfect cuts. So for any cuts up to about 50 inches, a 4-foot level is a better straightedge. This requires clamping your straightedge away from the cutting line at precisely the same distance between where the blade cuts and the side edge of the saw base, which can take a couple of test-cuts to get it just right. A steel ruler or a machinist's rule helps with setup (and a lot of other marking tasks).

Using a Speed Square

"Speed Square" is actually a brand name, but it's the standard term for the pouch-size right-triangle squares that have a flange (or lip) along one edge and are handy for marking 90? and 45? lines, as well as a full range of other angles (usually for rafter cuts). These squares also make great straightedge guides for circular saws, perfect for cutting studs and other smallish lumber to length. Simply mark your cutting line with the square, then position your saw at the line. Set the square on the board so the flange is tight up against its front or back edge (your preference) and slide the square over so it butts against the side of the saw base. Fine-tune the position of the saw and square, then hold the square firmly in place and make the cut, keeping the saw base riding along the edge of the square.

Guiding With a Pinch

For quick rip cuts that don't have to be perfect, there's no need to make a full-length chalk or pencil line. Instead, mark the width of the cut at the starting end of your workpiece, position the saw so the blade is on the line, then use your non-trigger hand to pinch the saw base between your thumb and forefinger, with the nail of your forefinger snug against the edge of the workpiece. As you push the saw through the cut, your nail rides along the wood's edge to keep it on track.

Plunge-Cutting

This is a classic trim carpenter's trick for making interior cutouts in paneling and other sheet material, such as rectangular holes for electrical outlets. It takes a little practice to perfect, but using it will clearly demonstrate to any onlookers that you've taken your tool skills to another level.

To make a plunge cut, retract the saw's safety guard, and position the front edge of the saw base on the workpiece, tilting the saw so the blade is above the cutting line but not touching the material. Start the saw and let it come to full speed, then slowly pivot it down so the blade cuts into the workpiece, much like a chop saw or miter saw. Keep your eye on both the front and back of the blade because it's cutting in both directions at once, making it easy to overcut. If the cut is long, pivot the saw all the way down so the base is flat on the work, then move the saw forward, as usual, to complete the cut. You can also go backwards just a bit before going forward, but do this with extra caution.

At the end of the cut, carefully tilt the saw up again, pivoting on the front edge of the base as before, to retract the blade from the work. For short cuts, you'll usually keep the guard retracted and the saw running throughout each cut, but on long cuts, you can release the guard once the base is on the wood, and you can stop moving the saw at the end of the cut and release the trigger to let the blade wind down to a stop before pulling it out of the work, if desired.

Safety note: Remember that circular saws force themselves backward (towards you!) during the cut. With the saw guard retracted, there's nothing between the spinning blade and anything in its path to the rear, so keep a firm grip on the saw and always stand to the side of the saw, especially during a plunge cut. Do not be like the San Diego-area carpenter who cut off his own hand.

Alcohol and Weight Loss | Healthy Living

Many people who want to lose weight also want to drink alcohol. This is normal. What most people don?t understand is that alcohol affects weight loss greatly. I?m not saying to completely stop drinking but it?s definitely something that must be thought about.

Let?s get this out of the way firstly, calories consumed from alcohol are worth nothing. It will not provide you with any kind of value at all. There is no protein, no carbohydrates, no fats, nothing. The only use for alcohol is getting drunk. There are social benefits but there are no fitness benefits whatsoever.

However some alcoholic drinks do contain some nutrients. Wine contains antioxidants that help reduce stress and increase endorphins. Endorphins are the feel good chemicals found in your body. These chemicals are the reason why a lot of people feel a bit better after a glass of wine. Also, alcohol contains quite a lot of hidden calories. If you mix drinks, you could easily have a lot of calories from the sugar and other ingredients that are mixed in.

You could easily be consuming more than 400 calories per drink. It might not seem much but consider this, say you only needed to eat 2400 calories a day. You would have wasted 4000 calories that would not advance the weight loss process. This is where counting calories is useful.

When you count calories it?s much easier to stay on top of everything. It?s a lot harder when you?re not sure what you?re actually eating/drinking in a day. ?It?s not hard to figure this out. Most alcoholic beverages will have a sticker on the back that shows the calorie information. You can find this in most restaurants and bars. Nightclubs won?t give this information though, unless you order bottles. Also the weight loss?process is much slower after a long drinking session. One thing alcohol can be used for in terms of weight loss is the ability to look more ripped. Alcohol dehydrates you and when you drink something like a vodka shot your body will instantly get rid of the water weight.

If you didn?t have a 6 pack before, you won?t have one now but it definitely makes your body look a tiny bit leaner. It?s all about body fat. Your body is 70% water and if you manage to get rid of some water for a short period of time, it?s easy to look leaner. Many bodybuilders and fitness professionals do this. Well, not always with alcohol but many of them strip away body fat with water manipulation techniques. Using alcohol is one way of doing this.

But all in all, if you want to lose weight it?s best to stay away from alcohol. Or at least drink it in moderation.

On pedantry | one man writes

I start this blog post with an admission and an apology.

Admission: I am a manager, I don?t spend a lot (any) of my time writing technical content these days.

Apology: One of my weakest areas is in the intricacies and ?correctness? of grammar. *

That said, there is one thing that continues to frustrate me about the technical communications profession, the constant ?deep dive? into every single aspect of one sentence, one clause. Dear grammar pedants, please stop!

Don?t get me wrong, I know that good written information is a keystone of our profession and I?m all for discussions to make sure things are being approached correctly and debated thoroughly, where appropriate.

Please note the last two words of the last sentence, ?where appropriate?.

Maybe it?s just me, but as each of us write for a specific audience, likely to a specific style guide, such discussions become academic almost from the get go. What really irks is when discussions on other aspects of our profession are diverted towards this area. For example, ?Content Strategy is important! ? Yes, but ultimately the paragraph that someone reads once they have found it needs to be written in the active voice and never ever punctuate that bulleted list with commas? ?

And so on.

I?ve seen it so many times I?ve started using it as a guide. When any online discussion that isn?t explicitly about grammar and punctuation, whether forum or mailing list, reaches the point that someone reaches for the grammar gun, I stop reading, I disengage.

A few years ago, when the?UA conference?reached Edinburgh in 2008, one of the sessions was by?Professor Geoffrey K. Pullum, a noted linguist. It was the closing session and I approached it with some dread, a presentation on language would surely be all about the use of transitive verbs and the perils of infinitives which are split. How wrong I was, leaving the room at the end with a simple, repeated message.

Write as you speak.?Write as if you were explaining something to someone sitting next to you, put aside the rules of grammar if needs be!

I blame my current stance, my dislike of long academic discussions on someone who, I?m sure, has initiated and partaken of many such discussions himself.

Forgive me if I?ve offend anyone, I?m not saying that correct grammar is a bad thing, far from it, I just think that in the current day and age we, as a profession, need to raise our view and focus on bigger things. The language will take care of itself, one way or another, let it go!

We should be looking to influence, to sell, to push ourselves to the forefront of our companies as the experts we are in that valuable (and its stock continues to rise) commodity, information.
