My new book arrived: The Ultimate Book of Family Card Games ...

I came home to a great surprise yesterday: copies of my latest book, sent from Sterling Publishing! I was about to go to a Chinese restaurant with my mom and brother, so I brought some books along for them. When we were about to order dinner, one of the staff in the restaurant became really excited and talkative when she saw the cover of my book. It seems she was convinced that the book was about how to play blackjack, and she loved to gamble. She was very friendly and happy, and offered a lot of advice about gambling, but I don?t think she believed us when we told her the book wasn?t about blackjack.

Here are a few links for buying the book:

Here?s the cover?It?s a larger-format book than I had expected, and I like it!

93-year-old U.S. deportee as arrested as alleged Auschwitz death camp

BERLIN (AP) ? A 93-year-old man who was deported from the U.S. for lying about his Nazi past was arrested by German authorities Monday on allegations he served as an Auschwitz death camp guard, Stuttgart prosecutors said.

Hans Lipschis was taken into custody after authorities concluded there was "compelling evidence" he was involved in crimes at Auschwitz while there from 1941 to 1945, prosecutor Claudia Krauth said.

Lipschis has acknowledged being assigned to an SS guard unit at Auschwitz but maintains he only served as a cook and was not involved in any war crimes.

Krauth said, however, that a judge upheld her office's request for an arrest warrant after concluding there was enough evidence to hold him before charges on accessory to murder are brought. Bringing formal charges, a process similar to a U.S. grand jury indictment, would take another two months, she said.

In the meantime, Krauth said a doctor has confirmed Lipschis' health remains good enough for him to be kept in detention.

Lipschis does not currently have an attorney, and a public defender has not yet been appointed, she said.

Lipschis was deported from the U.S. in 1983 for lying about his Nazi past when he immigrated to Chicago in the 1950s after the war.

With no evidence linking him to specific war crimes, however, it was impossible under previous German law to bring charges against him in Germany.

But the case is now being pursued on the same legal theory used to prosecute former Ohio autoworker John Demjanjuk, who died last year while appealing his 2011 conviction in Germany for accessory to murder on the grounds that he served as a guard at the Sobibor death camp.

Under the new line of thinking, even without proof of participation in a specific crime, a person who served at a death camp can be charged with accessory to murder because the camp's sole function was to kill people.

Even though the Demjanjuk conviction is not considered legally binding because he died before his appeals were exhausted, the special German prosecutors' office that deals with Nazi crimes has said about 50 other people in the same category are being investigated.

Efraim Zuroff, the chief Nazi hunter with the Simon Wiesenthal Center, called the Lipschis arrest a good start.

"This is a very positive step, we welcome the arrest," he said in a telephone interview from Israel. "I hope this will only be the first of many arrests, trials and convictions of death camp guards."

In an interview last month with Die Welt newspaper at his home in southwestern Germany, Lipschis said he spent his entire time as a cook and had witnessed none of the atrocities. He did say, however, that he "heard about" what was going on.

About 1.5 million people, primarily Jews, were killed at the Auschwitz camp complex between 1940 and 1945.

Pakistan's lead prosecutor in Bhutto case killed

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Gunmen killed a Pakistani prosecutor Friday who was leading investigations into the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and a brutal attack on civilians in the Indian city of Mumbai.

The assassination in the capital, Islamabad, comes at a sensitive time in Pakistan, as the country prepares for nationwide elections on May 11 amid a spate of Taliban attacks on candidates. In the southern city of Karachi, gunmen on motorcycles killed an anti-Taliban election candidate and his son, and a political activist in two other attacks Friday.

The government prosecutor who was gunned down, Chaudhry Zulfikar Ali, was at the helm of a number of highly controversial cases. The two most prominent included Bhutto's death in 2007 and the 2008 Mumbai attack by Pakistan-based militants that killed 166 people.

The Bhutto case has received renewed attention in recent weeks because of the return of former Pakistani military ruler Pervez Musharraf from self-imposed exile. Musharraf, who was in power when she was killed, has been arrested in connection with the case.

Ali was on his way to a court in Rawalpindi, next to Islamabad, when gunmen fired at him, hitting him in the head, shoulder and chest, and then fled in a taxi and on a motorcycle, said police officer Arshad Ali. The prosecutor was shot at least 13 times and his car was pockmarked with bullets and the windshield shattered.

He then lost control of his car, which hit a woman passer-by and killed her, said another police officer, Mohammed Rafiq.

Ali's guard returned fire and is believed to have wounded at least one of the attackers, Rafiq said. The guard also was injured in the attack. Police have launched a search to find and apprehend the gunmen.

Though Pakistan has experienced rampant violence in recent years, it's rare for such an attack to happen in the capital, which is home to high-ranking government and military officials, diplomats and international aid workers.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but suspicion will likely fall on Islamic militants.

Bhutto's husband, President Asif Ali Zardari, strongly condemned the prosecutor's slaying and called for a thorough investigation.

Government prosecutors have accused Musharraf of being involved in the Bhutto assassination and not providing enough security to Pakistan's first female prime minister. Musharraf has denied the allegations but is currently under house arrest on the outskirts of Islamabad in connection with the case.

Musharraf blamed the Pakistani Taliban at the time of the attack. Initially the militants denied responsibility, but they eventually said they did it several years later.

The Bhutto case has lingered for years in the Pakistani court system. A number of alleged assailants are on trial but no one has been convicted.

The prosecutor told reporters that he had received death threats recently in connection with the case but would not say who from or what they said. He was headed to a hearing related to Musharraf and the Bhutto case at a court in Rawalpindi when he was killed, police said.

Ali was also the government's lead prosecutor in a case related to the attack on Mumbai that is widely believed to have been carried by the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Pakistan has put seven men on trial on charges they assisted in the Mumbai siege, but the trial has made little progress. India has criticized Pakistan for not doing more to crack down on the militants blamed for the attack. Hafiz Saeed, the head of a group believed to be a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba, remains free, and many believe he enjoys the protection of the government. Lashkar-e-Taiba was founded years ago with the help of Pakistani intelligence to put pressure on India over the disputed territory of Kashmir.

Also on Friday, gunmen riding a motorcycle in Karachi shot to death Sadiq Zaman Khattak, who was running for parliament from the Awami National Party, and his six year-old son, said police officer Mohammad Ali.

The attack occurred as Khattak was leaving a mosque after weekly prayers. Four people were wounded, said Ali, the police officer.

The Awami National Party has been repeatedly targeted by the Taliban in the run-up to the election because of its opposition to the militants. The Taliban have threatened two other secular parties as well, including the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, which controls Karachi.

In the second attack in Karachi, gunmen riding on a motorcycle killed a prominent activist from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Mohammad Adil, outside a different mosque, said police officer Mohsin Khan.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The May 11 election is historic because it will mark the first time in Pakistan that a civilian government has finished its term and handed over power in democratic elections. Pakistan has experienced three coups, including the one led by Musharraf in 1999.

Giant rubber duck sails into Hong Kong harbor

The 54-foot-tall rubber duck makes its way into Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour (Bobby Yip/Reuters)

It was like something out of a Ducks Unlimited member?s dreams: A 54-foot-tall rubber duck sailed into a Hong Kong harbor on Thursday.

Hundreds gathered at Victoria Harbour to cheer the arrival of the duck, which was designed by Dutch artist Flortentijn Hofman. The enormous duckling was built in 2007 and has since traveled to 13 cities and nine countries.

"My sculptures cause an uproar, astonishment and put a smile on your face," Hoffman told the Daily Mail. "They give people a break from their daily routines. Passers-by stop in front of them and enter into conversation with other spectators. People are making contact with each other again."

You can watch a slideshow of the Rubber Duck's arrival below:

So does the duck have a specific message for the people of the world?

Well, sort of. On Hofman?s website, he offers the following explanation for the history of his creation: ?The Rubber Duck knows no frontiers, it doesn't discriminate people and doesn't have a political connotation. The friendly, floating Rubber Duck has healing properties: it can relieve mondial tensions as well as define them. The rubber duck is soft, friendly and suitable for all ages!?

Happiness tracking software could gauge mood in photos

SMILE ? you're on camera! If you want a quick way to pick out the happiest snaps from a wedding or judge the changing mood of a crowd, now there's software that can do it for you.

Developed by Abhinav Dhall at the Australian National University in Canberra and colleagues, the software analyses all the faces in a photo to give the shot an overall "mood score".

The team used face tracking software to analyse the smiles of the faces in a group by noting the positions of nine spots on the face such as the corners of the mouth and eyes. A machine learning algorithm, trained on photos that had been pre-labelled by humans, then used this data to give each face a smile intensity score.

The team also programmed the system to incorporate information from volunteers, who assessed how important the intensity of any individual's smile was to the overall mood score of a photo. Those who were standing near the centre of a picture were given a stronger weighting, for example, while partially obscured faces were less influential. When asked to gauge the happiness level of a photo, the system only deviated from the opinion of a human by around 7 per cent. The software was presented at the Conference on Multimedia Retrieval in Dallas, Texas, last week.

Dhall says the aim is to be able to assess the overall mood of a group from a single shot. By looking at a sequence of frames in a video, it could even gauge the mood of a crowd in real time. "If the mood score goes down over the time, we can assume that the group are getting angry," says Dhall. It could also be used to view albums on Facebook by arranging photos so the happiest ones are shown first, for example.

Ranael Kaliouby says the work fits well with what she is doing with her emotion analysis company, Affectiva. "I love the application ? namely, understanding and modelling the overall mood of a crowd," she says. "It gets us one step further to applying emotion measurement technologies in the real world."
